O’Hara, who plays Kevin’s mum, thought her character wasn’t distraught enough at her son going missing . Conscious of Culkin’s advancing age, Columbus planned to film two sequels simultaneously before he got too old. But production studio Fox rejected the idea because it cost too much. So Alex D. Linz came in for the third film and it duly flopped. In the first movie, Harry is shown to have the intelligence to do things like pose as a cop in order to obtain information about security of neighborhood homes and also control neighborhood Christmas lights. In this film, he also devises a plan use the toy house at Duncan's Toy Chest as a way of hiding in the store after it closes in order avoid entering it from the outside and setting off alarms in the process. However, Harry is revealed to be actually more dimwitted than the master thief expert he presents himself as and even claimed that he never made it to the sixth grade.

At the toy store when Kevin is speaking with Mr. Duncan at the cash register, Duncan asks Kevin about all the money in his envelope. As Kevin is taking money out of the envelope to pay for his things he later uses to lure Marv and Harry, he places the envelope on the counter. When the camera switches back to the counter, the only things on there are the map and Swiss army knife. When Kevin requested to make a donation to the toy store, the money envelope was back in his hand. In-between, however, there is a close-up of Mr. Duncan handling the money to put in the cash register.

He's relieved when the cops say that none of the money was taken, thanks to a brick that triggered the alarm. Then Mr. Duncan sees the note attached to the brick, with the person who wrote it apologizing for breaking the window. Kevin didn't do this expecting an award; he did it to make things right. Mr. Duncan gets a look in his eyes as he studies the Plaza stationery, does some detective work, and sends several rooms' worth of presents to the suite where the McCallisters are staying.

Kevin is not forgotten but hops the wrong plane after he puts fresh batteries in the family camera right before he gets to the gate at the airport (his family had all the bad luck with high winds knocking out the electric - and the alarm clock - twice). Who could have thought a vacant New York brownstone could be so much fun? Sure, Pesci's and Stern's characters are more banged up this time but, hey, they started it.
